Focusing

Active and embodied listening are at the core of the bodywork space I offer. In addition I can also guide a session without touch, where we create a space, with and without words, to support you to listen more keenly to your own unfolding process.

Based on the work of Eugene Gendlin, Focusing is a practice that evolves from his philosophy which delves deeply into the importance of experiencing – our moment by moment lived experience.

In a guided Focusing session you will have space to tend to the still forming sense of what cannot yet be put into words, time to dwell at the edge of awareness, where what we know meets what we do not yet know. This can lead us to connecting to a felt sense of a moment, a situation, a relationship, an issue, which may be at once unclear or fuzzy and yet oddly specific. We may search for the right word, or gesture, or sound to describe something, and notice how this felt sense of it inside responds to the rightness of the expression when it fits.

Through welcoming this exploration, acknowledging the knowledge of the body at the centre, we can notice our felt experiencing of living more fully.

This process can be beneficial if there is a ‘something’ that you would like to widen your perspective upon, a creative endeavour that you would like to find a different or deeper relationship to, or simply a desire to slow down and expand a little more than is habitual in your lived experience in the present moment.

I have completed a 2 year part time training at London Focusing to offer guided Focusing sessions. These last 45 minutes, including a little time to arrive and settle together. While this work can be therapeutic, and I am skilled in holding space safely for complex emotions, I am not trained as a counsellor or psychotherapist. If you feel you need these professional services I am able to make recommendations to practitioners I trust.

Once you have experienced a Focusing process you may be interested in finding out more. One of the joys of this work for me has been it’s democratic and accessible attitude, and a philosophy that embraces reciprocity.
